Respect Your Students!

It might be easier to come up with bad English teachers than ideal teachers. Even though I have learned English for more than 10 years, it's hard to remember any good English teachers. However, among a very few of good teachers, I know an English teacher who was impressive to me. Her name was Makiko who taught English at American Language Program in California State University Eastbay. I was not a student of her class, but an observer as a student of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) certificate program. On the first day of the class, she seemed too lenient. I thought she was one of lazy teachers. For example, she did not even say anything when students came to class late or did not do their homework. I criticized her teaching on my observation papers saying she didn't have any passion. However, as the time went by, I was surprised that students in the class worked harder than in any other classes. I was wondering how it worked. It was Makiko's respect toward her students. She never corrected student's English or pointed out their bad behaviors. Instead, she always appreciated each student's participation. She listened to them and trusted them. She was right! Over five different classes that I was observing at the same time, the class was the best. It changed my belief that teachers should be strict or strong. After attending the last class, I had to finish my observation paper. I wrote that when teachers respected students, students respected the teachers and that's how this class worked.

Obtaining Driver License

If you think everyone passes driving test at once, you are wrong. One of my friends had to take the test twice. She is not an idiot. She just never expected it could happen to her. First of all, she didn't have enough time and she wanted to finish it as soon as possible. She registered for a two-week course. She practiced driving every day for more than four hours including weekend. That was the problem. You should keep it mind driving doesn't be trained in a short time. If you are busy, find a close a driving practice place to your house. Then you can practice for fewer hours for more days. Next, manage your time! Do not spend too much time on studying for paper exams. You can easily pass it if you study hard for about five hours. My friend got a good score on it, but it didn't matter. It's simply a pass or fail test. The last thing that I can advise you is "Don't hurry". That's the one my friend missed. She was full of confidence after an intensive practice. She was just happy that she went through some steps successfully, so she forgot to wait for the green light. She should have waited for only a few more seconds and passed the stop line. She got zero point for that part. She unfortunately had to do it over from the beginning. My friends and I still tease her asking, "You passed driver license test at once, didn't you?" Be careful! Everyone can fail in obtaining driver license.
