Letter from a Private

"Letter from a private" by Kim Kwang Suk is my favorite piece of music. This song always reminds me the hard times I had in the military. It is the song about a private who just starts to serve the country. The lyrics of the song are in the format of his solitary monologue expressing his sorrow and loneliness. In the beginning, the song starts with an elegiac melody of harmonica and guitar along with the lyrics describing the pitiful situation which he gives farewell address to his parents and friends. Then the song keeps its melody with the lyrics of private's resolute feeling toward the fact that he is now a real soldier who protects his family and his nation. My favorite part of this song is at the last that says "Now it starts again, the dreams of young days". It seems to me that this is what the singer mainly wants to point out for the soldiers. Despite of pain and agony in every moment while serving for the country, soldiers should have sort of an ambition for his future. I recall memories of times when I was a private in the military. I was so lonely at that time, so this song always made me cry. However, I had to gulp my tears up because privates were not allowed to cry. Even though I had suffered, I also had dreamed about the bright future while listening to this music when I was a private. Now, this song always brings back memories and those memories fall and soak my chest.
