week 1 paragraph

The Quietest Room

Shinjae Sung

Assignment date: 23/06/10

Out of all the rooms in my house, I am most fond of the bathroom. I, like most people, cannot do without it. But unlike most, I do not just use it solely for the purpose it exists for and enjoy it as my own private space. Most of the time, home is hectic. Everyone comes home from work or school at around the same time and the idea of relaxing after a hard day is different for the rest of my family than what it is for me. At times, this makes my mother's blaring television and the sound effects from my brother's computer games a bit too much to handle seeing as I enjoy the quiet and prefer sitting in places like the public library. So during the hours that my house sounds more like an arcade than anything else, I run for cover and head for the bathroom. Many people would cringe at the thought of using the bathroom for anything else than what it is meant to be used for because they think a bathroom is always dirty. But in an average home, it is usually cleaner than other rooms. Most of us tend to clean the bathroom more often than other rooms as everyone uses the bathroom to wash on a daily basis. And besides, no other room has running water apart from the kitchen but my kitchen doesn't have a door so there isn't much privacy there. I enjoy reading but hate it when people keep interrupting me and the bathroom is the perfect place to read. When in the bathroom I needn't necessarily get into the tub; I could just put the toilet seat down, sit cross-legged on it and read a book. Of course, the round, cradle-like bathtub is very useful for sleepless nights and some bathtubs are much better than your average sofa. The tiled floor is just as acceptable as a cooling mat, especially on sticky, hot summer days. Surprisingly serene in contrast to various other rooms, when I spend time in the bathroom I feel calm as if in a submarine submerged in a tank of deep water. For most, a favourite room is a bedroom or a study and many take the bathroom for granted, but I find it has more meaning to me as a sanctuary and a place away from the normal bustle of life.

  1. This piece of writing is about room you like the most in your house and you wrote about your bathroom. What I like about this writing is you described it with many adjectives and refreshing words such as submarine submerged in deep water when you described how you felt in the bathroom. I can even picture how the bathroom look like through those words.

I think the main point seems to be you likes the bathroom at the most because you can have her own space in there.

Another words or expression struck me is "normal bustle of life", because I can feel more emphasis on it than you just say "normal life".

Just one sentence that a little bit unclear for me is this part; "And besides no other room has running water apart from the kitchen but my kitchen doesn't have a door so there isn't much privacy there." I cannot find any connection between water and privacy, so it would be better if it was more specific.

If you explain more about how you use the bathroom in order to feel secure or calm and why you like bathroom more than your own room. It would be nice comparison, I think.

  2. 1. I really like the fact that lots of descriptions were used. I also like how the writer chose something unique to write about.

    2. Your main point seems to be that as long as yu can find your own space, the place or the location you are in does not matter.

    3. The expression, "run for cover and head for the bathroom", impressed me. the expression sounds like something you'd hear in a war or a game. But the writer mentioned that the house was like an arcade, making this sentence suitable.

    4. The definition of the word "bathroom" isn't clear enough for me as the writer said "as everyone uses the bathroom to wash on a daily basis" but also she mentioned that "I could just put the toilet seat down, sit cross-legged on it". So it could have been better to clearify the details of the bathroom.

    5. Like mentioned above, just clarifying the definition of the word "bathroom" is the thing that needs to be adjusted.
