The Gates of Hell

Unlike heaven, the concept about Hell is so little that the image is mostly connected to only fire and brimstones in a

very vague way. Still, there is one piece of art that gives a quite concrete picture of hell. Auguste Rodin's sculpture "The Gates of Hell" depicts a scene from Dante Alighieri's "The Inferno" representing a very clear vision how Hell would look like; a place where it is full of people suffering from their sins. This bronze sculpture gate stands at 6.35m high, 4m wide and about 1m deep with two door panels. It contains 186 human figures which are entangled with each other and have wretched faces on them. Among them, there are several outstanding statues in "The Gates of Hell". On the very top of the gate, stand three sculptures, called the "The Three Shades,"which are 98cm high, posing downwards, heads bended and arm stretched with their fist clenched. Below them and right upon the door panels, there is a statue which is sitting and looking down on other figures. Also known as "The Thinker," this sculpture has its elbow on its knee and the hand holding his chin, while the other arm is just resting on the same leg. Beneath it, there are smaller figures on the door panels and on the panes surrounding the door. "The Gates of Hell" does not demonstrate scary carvings, but conveys the idea of hell by expressing humans' pains and agony in its statues.

P.S. Sorry. I think I did the same mistake as below.. Really sorry!!

  1. What I like about this piece of writing is very detailed. It gives a lot of details about the sculptures and that makes this piece of writing powerful. I especially liked the details about size and postures of the sculptures. Your main point seems to be "The Gates of Hell" describes hell with a concerete picture as well as coveying the idea of hell. These particular lines struck me as powerful: human figures entangled with each other and have wretched faces on them. I like them because it describes well about the agony of the people in hell. These lines or parts could be improved: full of people suffering from their sins. They need improving because people are suffering not from their sins but they are suffering because of their sins. The one change you could make that would make the biggest improvement in this piece of writing is that maybe you could use a liitle bit of imagination and add them to your description. It might give more vividness and feelings to your writing. -Jiyoon Bae-

  2. What I like about this piece of writing is that you explain it into very detail. Your main point seems to be 'The Gate of hell' is valubable sculpture because of delicate decorations of the hell. Particulary, descriptions of some outstanding statues such as 'The three shadows' and 'The thinker' are very impressive. Through your description, I came to know that 'The gate of hell' is not a one single piece but consists of many different small precious stautes. This paragraph is well organized with clear topic sentence and information which is full of descriptive details but it would be more remarkable if you include your feelings or thoughts about the sculpture.
